爱尔兰歌手达米恩·赖斯（Damien Rice）以低调著称，英国《独立报》用“全世界最低调的流行歌手”来形容他，但从来不愿意接受任何采访的赖斯破天荒地接受了专访，而这一切都是为了昂山素季。
2005年，美国支持缅甸运动组织发起了“释放60岁的昂山素季”活动，组织人员联系到当红歌手赖斯，希望他能将自己的歌曲选一首出来，作为活动的宣传曲。但当赖斯了解到昂山素季的故事后，他创作了一首新歌《弹不了的钢琴》，向昂山素季致敬。
事实上，在此之前赖斯并不知道昂山素季，但她的一幕生活经历深深打动了这位创作型音乐人。在过去的21年里，昂山素季有长达15年被软禁在自己在仰光湖边的处所，门外有铁丝网环绕，荷枪实弹的士兵巡逻，门前路上有铁钉，与世隔绝。但这位夫人并没因此消沉，据她的助手说，不管经历怎样的变故，夫人都会抽出时间看书，学习日语和法语，而当她情绪波动的时候，她最喜欢坐在家里的钢琴前弹琴。
但有一次她因为情绪过于激动，在弹奏中将这架旧钢琴弹坏了，当局却不允许人上门修理。于是，昂山素季只能在处所里每天面对“弹不了的钢琴”。这一幕打动了赖斯，他和女音乐人丽萨·汉妮岗一同写下这首歌，并在昂山素季生日之际在伦敦现场演唱了这首歌：
“来吧，让我自由，为什么我要被锁在这里，只因为他们想要将我的存在抹杀…弹不了的钢琴放在窗边，爱她的人却走不进去，她独坐琴前，和着无声的歌，有谁能带她回家。”
为了推广这首歌，赖斯破例接受媒体采访，面对采访浑身不自在，说起话来还磕磕巴巴，不过这一举动的确让更多人了解了昂山素季。
